A sanctuary where Snow Leopard still roams and glaciers feed the city below

The Zailiysky Alatau, the northernmost ridge of the legendary Tien Shan ("Celestial Mountains"), forms a dramatic natural wall that defines the edge of the Great Steppe. Within these jagged peaks lies the Ile-Alatau National Park — a 200,000-hectare sanctuary of alpine meadows, turquoise glaciers, and ancient wild apple forests.

Nestled directly at the base of these giants is Almaty, the largest megapolis in Central Asia. The city does not merely sit near the mountains — it is an extension of them. The snow-capped ridges of the Ile-Alatau serve as the city's permanent skyline, cooling the air and feeding the emerald-green parks with glacial meltwater. Almaty is a rare urban miracle where you can transition from a sophisticated financial district to a silent, high-altitude forest in less than thirty minutes.

What unfolds in the Ile-Alatau

Alpine meadows, ancient wild apple forests, and glaciers that define the skyline of Central Asia's largest city.

Alpine Meadows & Glaciers

High-altitude meadows give way to turquoise glaciers and peaks soaring nearly 5,000 metres. The Snow Leopard still roams these ridges — one of the few places in Central Asia where sightings remain possible.

Wild Apple Forests

The Tien Shan wild apple (Malus sieversii) grows here — the genetic ancestor of every apple on Earth. Walking through these ancient groves is a journey through the origin of something that feeds the entire world.

Gateway from Almaty

No other major city on Earth sits this close to wilderness of this scale. A thirty-minute drive places you in silence so complete you hear only wind and water. The park is Almaty's permanent invitation to leave.

Uniqueness

The Zailiysky Alatau is where the Great Steppe meets the Celestial Mountains. Almaty is perhaps the only metropolis on earth where the transition from a financial district to a silent high-mountain forest takes under thirty minutes. The snow leopard is a living inhabitant here — not a symbol.

Cultural layer

Relict apple forests: the Tien Shan is the genetic source of every cultivated apple on earth. Ancient Usun petroglyphs. Soviet-era mountain infrastructure (Medeu, Shymbulak), built for athletic elites — open today to all.

Dala Arba positioning

"The mountain ridge that made Almaty. Forty minutes from the city. Five thousand metres above sea level."

Where the city ends and deep nature begins

The Ile-Alatau is not a destination you travel to in the classic sense — it is the landscape that defines Almaty itself. Every expedition departing Almaty passes through its foothills. Every YurtaDa camp is set against its ridgeline. It is the beginning of everything we do.
