Ten days from the Caspian Sea to the mountains above Almaty. 3,300 km of the most varied terrain on earth: sea cliffs, chalk canyons, prehistoric formations, salt flats, Silk Road cities, wildflower valleys and the snow-capped Tian Shan. Begins in Aktau (where Part II ends) and traverses the full width of the country eastward. Ten nights expedition camping, all pre-scouted by Dauren Raptayev.

Day by day

Day 01Out of Aktau

The first canyons, the spherical valley, a camp under Sherkala

~300 km — straight from the Caspian into Mangystau's most cinematic geology.

  • Morning — Aktau → Ybykty-Say Canyon (41–66 M yr strata).
  • Midday — Zhygylan Crater (8 km, Caspian view). Torysh Valley of Balls — spherical seabed boulders.
  • Evening — Sherkala Mountain (lion-shaped peak). Camp at Airakty-Shomanay.
Day 02Salt & chalk

Tuzbayir — a salt flat at the foot of the Ustyurt cliffs

~200 km. Two panoramic viewpoints, fossil hunting, a camp on the salt itself.

  • Morning — Airakty-Shomanay → Tuzbayir salt flat.
  • Midday — Two panoramic viewpoints. Fossil hunting in chalk faces.
  • Evening — Camp at the salt flat — luminescent at dusk.
Day 03Into Bozzhyra

Layered "tiramisu" chalk, a volcanic cone, a camp among the spires

~180 km. Golden-hour photography at one of the most otherworldly landscapes on earth.

  • Morning — Tuzbayir → Kyzylkup "Tiramisu" — layered chalk, shark fossils.
  • Midday — Bokty volcanic cone.
  • Evening — Camp at Bozzhyra. Golden-hour photography among the spires.
Day 04Beket Ata

Sunrise among the spires, then a Sufi pilgrimage site

~270 km, ending with the first hotel bed in Beyneu.

  • Morning — Bozzhyra sunrise photography.
  • Midday — Beket Ata Underground Mosque — Sufi pilgrimage site, 1780.
  • Evening — Arrive Beyneu. Hotel night.
Day 05Onto the Aral

The dam that brought a sea back, flamingos at Kamystybas

~600 km — the longest drive of the expedition, into a conservation success story.

  • Morning — Beyneu → Large Aral Sea remnant.
  • Midday — Kokaral Dam — conservation victory.
  • Evening — Kamystybas Lake — flamingos. Camp.
Day 06Korkyt & Sauran

The singing steel kobyz, then a night inside a Silk Road city

~600 km. Camp inside the mud-brick walls of 15th-century Sauran.

  • Morning — Kamystybas → Korkyt Ata Memorial (singing steel kobyz).
  • Afternoon — Sauran — Silk Road mud-brick city, 15th c.
  • Evening — Camp inside ancient city walls. Stargazing from the ruins.
Day 07Yasawi

Tamerlane's mausoleum, then rock towers at sunset

~200 km. Kazakhstan's greatest medieval monument, followed by a camp at Kelinshecktau.

  • Morning — Sauran → Turkestan.
  • Midday — Yasawi Mausoleum (UNESCO, built by Tamerlane 1389–1405).
  • Evening — Kelinshecktau — isolated rock towers. Camp.
Day 08Aksu-Zhabagly

Limestone cave, petroglyphs, snow leopard country

~250 km into Central Asia's oldest nature reserve.

  • Morning — Kelinshecktau → Akmechet Cave (limestone cavern).
  • Midday — Boralday River petroglyphs.
  • Evening — Aksu-Zhabagly Reserve (1926, snow leopard habitat). Camp.
Day 09Tulip road

Wild poppies, the original tulip, balbals and radon springs

~350 km. Last camp under the dolomites of Merke.

  • Morning — Aksu-Zhabagly → Zhualin Valley — wild poppies & tulips in May (original homeland of the cultivated tulip).
  • Afternoon — Merke Dolomites — Turkic balbals, radon springs, Kok-Kol lake.
  • Evening — Last camp.
Day 10Into Almaty

The Tian Shan foothills all the way home

~350 km. The Great Kazakhstan Expedition concludes.

  • Morning — Merke Mountains → Almaty. Tian Shan foothills all the way.
  • Afternoon — Arrive Almaty. Expedition concludes.

How the expedition runs

Ten nights camping across the full width of Kazakhstan. Light on the body, demanding on attention — the variety of landscape is the point.

Activity level

Light — fully vehicle-based. Walking at each site is short and optional. Guests should be comfortable with genuine expedition conditions over an extended period.

Camp & meals

10 nights expedition camping in pre-scouted locations + 1 hotel night in Beyneu. All meals throughout (full board). Camp inside Sauran's ancient walls on Day 6.

Access & transfers

Private 4×4 expedition vehicles all 10 days (Land Cruiser / Patrol class). Expedition leader Dauren Raptayev and full team. Starlink at remote camps, MChS route registration.

Season
