Two days in one of Kazakhstan's largest and least-visited national parks.

The park holds the Singing Dune (150 m barchan with acoustic properties), the Oshaktas menhirs, Kosbastau sacred springs (a 700-year-old willow, radon waters), the Katutau volcanic mountains (300-million-year-old basalt), and the Aktau coloured range — twenty distinct mineral bands in white, red, ochre and blue. Night one is a wild camp under Altyn-Emel's deep sky.

Day 01Into the park

Almaty → Singing Dune → Aktau wild camp

A long, deliberate day that crosses the steppe, climbs the dune, and finishes under the coloured cliffs at sunset.

  • Morning — 05:00 depart Almaty. 08:30 Basshi visitor centre — permits (30 min). Oshaktas menhirs and the Genghis Khan legend.
  • Midday — Singing Dune — 150 m ascent and harmonic resonance on the descent. Kosbastau oasis — lunch at the 700-year willow and radon springs.
  • Afternoon — Katutau volcanic mountains (300-million-year-old basalt, ~1 hr). Drive to Aktau across the open park (~406 km on the day).
  • Evening — Wild camp under the Aktau cliffs — sunset over the coloured canyon.

The mineral cliffs ignite at first light. After camp breakfast and a slow morning of photography, the road carries you back across the steppe.
