2Bortle

Dark sky classification

Bortle Class 2 night skies — 4,000+ stars to the naked eye, the Milky Way unmistakable overhead.

150m

The Singing Dune

A solitary barchan whose sand rings in harmonic resonance — 100–300 Hz — as you walk down.

5,000+

Tanbaly Tas petroglyphs

Bronze Age to medieval carvings: ibex, hunters, Buddhist figures and shamanic symbols on a single stone field.

Day by day

Day 01Kurgans & first stars

Almaty → Altyn-Emel — into the steppe of the Saka kings

A three-hour drive into the national park opens with two of the steppe's oldest archives — royal mounds and a stone field of carvings — before the night sky comes back.

  • Morning — Drive Almaty → Altyn-Emel (~3 hrs).
  • Midday — Besshatyr Royal Burial Mounds (75 Saka mounds, 7th–4th c. BC).
  • Afternoon — Tanbaly Tas petroglyphs (5,000+ carvings, Bronze Age–medieval).
  • Evening — Welcome dinner at camp. Star map orientation and telescope session under Bortle Class 2 skies.
Day 02Singing Dune & Aktau

The sound of the dune, the colour of the cliffs

A full day across the park's signature landscapes — sacred springs, a 150 m barchan that hums, and the layered badlands of Aktau at golden hour.

  • Morning — Sunrise yoga / breathwork. Oshaktas standing stones.
  • Midday — Singing Dune — 150 m ascent, harmonic resonance on descent.
  • Afternoon — Kosbastau Springs (700-yr willow, radon waters, sacred nomadic site).
  • Evening — Aktau Cliffs at sunset (30+ km coloured badlands). Milky Way telescope session.
Day 03Pre-dawn canyon & farewell

The cliffs ignite — from black to colour

Leave camp before first light to watch the mineral cliffs of Aktau turn on, then a slow morning of reflection before the long road back across the steppe.

  • Morning — Pre-dawn Aktau canyon trek (leave camp before first light — mineral cliffs ignite to colour).
  • Midday — Morning walk at contemplative pace. Guided reflection & journal time. Farewell breakfast.
  • Afternoon — Return to Almaty via Saryozek steppe (~4 hrs).
